Prepare Excel worksheets
Choose a worksheet by name, or process a workbook without knowing its worksheet names in advance.
You need an AltDat API key and access to the custom connector. Public certification is pending; private testers need the updated connector definition. Start with the first workflow tutorial for connection setup.
Select one worksheet
- Use OneDrive or SharePoint Get file content to read your XLSX file.
- Add Prepare a table. Select the file action's File Content and set Source Format to
xlsx. - Open the advanced parameters and enter the exact Worksheet Name, such as
September Orders. Leave it blank to read the first worksheet. - Pass Prepare's Body to Filter, Select, Export, or another AltDat table action.
This works on every AltDat plan and uses the normal Prepare charge. Names are case-sensitive; a name that does not exist fails without charging. Worksheet Name applies only to XLSX files.
Process every worksheet separately
- After Get file content, add Prepare an Excel workbook (paid AltDat plans) and select its File Content.
- Set Output Mode to Separate tables. This is the default.
- Add Apply to each and select the workbook action's Tables output.
- Inside the loop, add Export a table. Map the current table's Table Content to AltDat Table Content and choose a target format, such as CSV. You can add other table actions before Export.
- Add Create file inside the loop. Use Export's Body as file content and the current Table Name in a unique file name, for example
September Orders.csv. Adjust names to meet your storage provider's filename rules.
Each item includes its worksheet name, ordered column names, row count, column count, and table content. Worksheets retain their workbook order and may have different columns or types. The number of loop iterations follows the number of included worksheets.
If the content token is hard to find, the expression items('Apply_to_each')?['body']?['$content'] selects it; use your loop's actual name. Do not pass the entire Tables array or the original XLSX file to a table action inside the loop.
Combine worksheets into one table
Choose Combined table in Output Mode. Tables then contains one item, so the same loop runs once. You can also select that first item's Table Content directly.
Rows are stacked in worksheet order. Columns match by exact name; columns absent from a worksheet contain empty values for those rows. The added _worksheet column identifies the source worksheet for every row. Change Source Worksheet Column in the advanced parameters if that name already exists in your data.
For example, worksheets January and February with columns order_id and amount become one table with all their orders plus _worksheet. A region column present only in February remains empty for January's rows.
A column containing numbers on one worksheet and text on another is rejected without charging. Use Separate tables to handle those sheets independently, or make their source types consistent. All-empty columns can adopt another worksheet's type.
Visibility, limits, and credits
Workbook preparation requires a plan with workbook access, enabled on Starter and above by default. It reads visible worksheets unless Include Hidden Worksheets is enabled. Chart sheets are ignored. Empty worksheets contribute no data rows.
The first row supplies column headers. Save the workbook after calculating formulas: AltDat reads saved cell values and does not recalculate formulas. Password-protected workbooks cannot be prepared.
The default service limit is 100 included worksheets. All included worksheets share your plan's row limit and the service's total table and response-size limits. Combined output must also fit those limits after missing columns and the source worksheet column are added.
One workbook request has one charge, regardless of output mode. The default base is 3 credits, multiplied by the row band for the total rows in included worksheets: 3 credits through 25,000 rows, 6 through 150,000, and 9 above that, subject to plan limits. Check pricing for the live matrix. Each later table action has its own charge.
Parsing, incompatible-type, and size-limit failures return no partial tables and do not charge workbook credits. Split a workbook that exceeds a limit. For help with an error, contact support@altdat.com with the request ID.
